Way back in 1958, the Agostino family ran one of the oldest and most famous restaurants of those times, the “Da Rocco” Hotel Restaurant, located in Marina di GIoiosa Jonica, where a young and whimsical chef named Gaetano worked. . After a court hearing, a well-known judge asked his colleagues where to have lunch, and arrived at the “Da Rocco” restaurant asking for a local specialty.
Chef Gaetano then invented spaghetti with a spicy sauce for his guests. The judge, after having seconds, asked for the name of the dish, but being an invention of the moment, the Chef said he hadn’t given it a name yet. At that point, the judge named the dish “Spaghetti alla Corte d’Assise”, given the strictness of the Court of Assizes in various trails.
